But it’s not just humans that get to celebrate the spooky holiday—pets are also getting in on the fun.
The survey, conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, found that consumers are planning to spend an average of $86.27 each—or $8.8 billion total—on Halloween decorations, costumes and candy. The total is slightly down from last year’s $9 billion, making 2019 the third highest total in the survey’s 15-year history.
Most of that money ($3.2 million) will be spent on costumes. In addition to their human kids, many parents are also planning to dress up their fur babies. According to the survey, 29 million people said they are going to wrestle their pets into Halloween costumes this year.

- Hot dog (7.2%)
- Superhero (7.2%)
- Bumble Bee (3.9%)
- Cat (3.2%)
- Witch (2.5%)
- Lion (2.2%)
- Dog (2.1%)
- Devil (2%)
- Shark (1.7%)
Inspiration for these costume choices mostly came from online searches, as cited by 35% of consumers. Other popular sources for Halloween costume choices include in-store browsing (28%), family and friends (20%), and social media (18%).
